Exercise, along with other lifestyle factors, goes hand in hand in building and maintaining Bone Mineral Density (BMD). In fact it’s recognised as one of the most effective ways to help make our bones as strong as possible!
BUT the TYPE of exercise matters!
For adults, it is important to be doing regular (3+ times a week) progressive resistance training, which incorporates moderate impact weight bearing exercises. This is evidence based exercise to improve or maintain BMD.
Another important factor when considering osteoporosis prevention and treatment is to address balance! Osteoporosis itself is not linked to pain; however having weaker bones increases your risk of fracture with falls. In our new OSTEOPOROSIS AND FALLS PREVENTION group class, we will also have a significant focus on improving balance and balance reactions to help prevent falls and therefore fractures!
